Metro train to whoosh past at 90 kmph Three inspection lines at Muttom metro yard are ready, fourth to be ready in a fortnight
Author: John L. Paul

KOCHI: The first Kochi Metro train is expected to zoom past at a speed of up to 90 km per hour along the test track at the Metro yard at Muttom by the end of this month.
It had attained a speed of up to 30 km per hour during trial run along the Muttom-Edappally corridor in March. “A buffer stop is awaiting Customs clearance and is expected to arrive at the yard within a few days. This mechanical device will help bring the three-coach train to a halt after it touches the top speed of 907 km per hour on the one-km-long track,” Metro sources said.
The top speed is critical since tracks have a design speed of 90 km per hour.
Three of the four inspection lines at the yard are ready, while the fourth will be ready in a fortnight. This is to inspect trains that arrive from Alstom’s factory in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.
The DMRC had sought the despatch of the second train by May 15 to carry out oscillation, load and other tests. The train will also be run parallel to the first train along the Metro viaduct. Timely completion of trial run is critical before inspection by the Commissioner for Railway Safety.
The second and subsequent trains will have standardised software following alterations made in the first train’s software after a string of tests and trial runs.
The software will be copied in the rest of the 23 trains. Three more trains are expected to be brought here by early July.
A senior Alstom official said the second train might be ready only by June.

Three-Member Team From French Funding Agency In City Today To Assess Project
A review of the Metro rail project, conducted by Metro agencies, has found that the work was lagging on many fronts, including that of signalling. The review was done ahead of the visit by a three-member team from AFD (Agence Française de Développement), the French development agency funding the project, on Wednesday.

The AFD team will evaluate the progress of the project. “As a prelude to the meeting with AFD, we have reviewed the work. We will brief the French team on the progress. As far as signalling is concerned, work is lagging and behind schedule.Control rooms will have to be set up at each station for signal works. The construction of the coach repairing yard at Muttom is also lagging,“ an official associated with the project sa id. “Installing the signalling system is a complicated job. It can't be done like civil work. We cannot complete it by just mobilizing more workers for the pur pose,“ the official said.

The AFD team is expected to give instructions to speed up the work. Top officials with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) attended the review meeting held on Tuesday .

However, the officials failed to respond to queries on whether the delay would affect commercial operations, expected to start by the end of the year.

The AFD team will also discuss the status of Phase II extension to Kakkanad. The French funding agency is expected to provide loans for the extension as well.

The revenue department has nearly completed the survey work and peg marking of the alignment of the extension to Kakkanad.

“We have completed the work along the stretch between Palarivattom and TV Junction at Kakkanad. The peg marking of the curve near the Kerala Press Academy is pending,“ a revenue official said.

As per the current plans, the Kakkanad extension stretches from Palarivattom to Infopark.

The three-member AFD team is also planning to visit Vyttila Mobility Hub, the main point of integration for different modes of transport.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that KMRL has plans to undertake the construction of the second phase of mobility hub.KMRL officials are expected to brief the AFD team about the project on Wednesday .

The AFD team consists of Nicolas Fornage, regional director for South Asia; Cheikh DIA, project officer and Juliette Le Pannerer, project coordinator, New Delhi. They will visit the project sites along the Metro corridor and the repair yard at Muttom. The team may inspect the alignment of the proposed extension to Kakkanad as well.

Metro rehabilitated tenants, paid owners
TNN | Updated: Feb 14, 2019, 08:28 IST

TNN
Several building owners were keen to part with their properties for the Metro project as their tenants were not ready to move out
KOCHI: When the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) announced its plans to extend the project from Pettah to Tripunithura, land and building owners were more than willing to part with their properties. Reason: Their inability to get the tenants evicted from their properties. The land and the buildings have been in the possession of the tenants for years, and the repeated attempts of the owners to get them out of these places have turned out to be futile.

“The tenants pay a measly amount as rent for occupying these spaces in prime locations. Though the rentals in the city and suburbs have gone up, they do not pay an increased rent. They also do not vacate the property. It is unable for the owner to get a new tenant who is willing to pay a higher rent,” said S Radhakrishnan, a resident of Tripunithura.

He said that when the Metro acquires land, the district administration provides compensation for the land owner and also rehabilitate the tenants. “It is the only chance for the owners to benefit from their properties,” he added.
The revenue department, which carries out land acquisition for the project, had a tough time negotiating the deal. While acquiring land belonging to local bodies, former Ernakulam district collector MG Rajamanickam had said that though land owners were willing to provide their property to the Metro, the tenants raised objections. He said land was in the possession of tenants who had been occupying the spaces for years, and they demanded higher rehabilitation package.
