Demand for parking at metro stations spikes in Bengaluru, but there’s little room
Urban mobility expert said more motorists would use the shuttles if the officials created enough parking facilities

Bengaluru: The findings of a study by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) show that there is a high demand for parking at metro stations. The reality, however, is that only a few stations have parking space.
Namma Metro’s four terminal stations — which have parking infrastructure — are attracting a higher number of vehicles than other stations. Around 12,000 two-wheelers and 2,200 four-wheelers are parked in 19 stations. This has enabled commuters to drop their vehicles and take the train. The remaining 22 stations — including MG Road and Trinity Circle — do not have parking infrastructure. This has prodded people to park their vehicles in residential lanes nearby.
The Baiyappanahalli, Mysuru Road and SV Road stations witness the highest number of parked vehicles. This is due to the availability of space and passenger demand. About 1,500 twowheelers and 350 four-wheelers are parked at the Baiyappanahalli and Mysuru Road stations, located at the ends of the East-West Corridor.

Stations such as Hosahalli, Jalahalli, National College and Banashankari are seeing a less number of vehicles parked as there is no adequate parking facility. During the design and implementation of Phase I, officials had cited expensive land prices as one of the reasons for not creating parking infrastructure.BL Yashwanth Chavan, chief public relations officer of BMRCL, admitted that there is a lack of parking infrastructure at some stations. “We are happy to see many people park their cars and two-wheelers and travel by the metro,” he said.
Urban mobility expert V Ravichandar said more motorists would use the shuttles if the officials created enough parking facilities. “Metro officials have lost an opportunity to create parking facilities in Phase I. Going underground on MG Road was one of the options. Parking infrastructure and intermodal connectivity should be an integral part of the station design,” he said.

Also, the current demand for parking at a station need not be the true-demand, he said. “Stations such as Mysuru Road and Baiyappanahalli attract vehicles as they have a lot of parking space. The absence of such facilities in other stations does not mean there is less demand,” he said.
Srinidhi Sampath, a software professional and member of Praja RAAG, said he stopped travelling to the National College station on a twowheeler as the parking space is always full.
