Pondy Cuddalore through road is about 25 30 kms.. Maybe lesser.. A passenger through Delta to MV or TJ would be helpful rather than an isolated PDY-CUPJ passenger.. If the proposed CUPJ-PDY-Mamallapuram ECR Chennai rail project sees the light of day, journey through this route can be a lot more better..

Not sure how much will this be of help. This will require a reversal at VM as well. It is 50 km via road compared to 85 km via VM.

I understand from the title that they are asking for new line. However the description says otherwise. It may be a goof up of the reporter

Gravy train: 6 more railway stations to get food plazas

Representative photo

CHENNAI: Six more Southern Railway stations will have food plazas, with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) coming up with plans to widen its passengers' food options.
The railways had proposed to set up the food plazas first at the Trichy and Madurai stations. Officials on Saturday opened the Trichy station outlet. In the next phase, they will set up food plazas at the eastern and western ends of Tambaram station and, later, at Egmore station (at the entrance from Poonamalee High Road), Arakkonam and Tiruttani.
"The Tambaram and Egmore food plazas have been designed outside the ticketing zone," a senior railway official said. "They will have entrances from outside the station so patrons will not be limited to people entering the stations."
Many south-bound train services will originate and end at Tambaram, which will be Chennai's third railway terminal, so officials expect a large number of customers at its food plazas.
The outlet in Egmore will also target metro rail commuters, as the transit system will have a station nearby.

http://m.timesofindia.com/city/chennai/runaway-locos-cause-panic-among-railway-officials-in-trichy/articleshow/58926560.cms

TRICHY: Two locomotives moved on their own for 11 kilometers from Trichy railway junction after a brake failure on Wednesday morning, causing panic among railway officials.

The locos crossed two railway stations -- Palakkarai and Fort -- and two road overbridges and a river bridge before coming to a halt at Mutharasanallur railway station, after completing a 15-minute travel.

The runaway locos didn't cause any accident as no trains were scheduled for crossing in the stretch between Trichy railway junction and Mutharasanallur railway station on the Trichy-Karur section when the incident happened.

According to officials in Trichy railway division, a shunting loco pilot brought two locos (No 40441 and 16881) to platform number A1 from the loco shed to couple them with the Trichy-Erode passenger train around 5.50am.

While the technical staff were preparing to couple them, the No 16881 loco started moving due to a brake failure and pushed the other loco (No 40441). The driver realised the situation and tried to stop the loco. However, he could not stop them and jumped out of the loco.

On being informed, station manager and others tried to stop the locos by placing stones on the tracks. However, their efforts went in vain.

Control room officials were alerted who in turn cautioned the station masters of Palakkarai, Fort station and Mutharasanallur station to stop the locos.
The locos travelled on the tracks and came to a halt after passing the last stopping signal (LSS) on Mutharasanallur railway station, which is situated on the outskirts of the city, around 6.00am.

Since the loco crossed LSS, officials technically termed the incident as signal passing at danger (SPAD), which is considered to be an accident.
Divisional railway manager Udaykumar Reddy rushed to Mutharasanallur station. Later, he ordered a probe in the incident.

http://m.timesofindia.com/city/trichy/shunting-loco-pilot-suspended-probe-begins/articleshow/58957599.cms

TRICHY: The divisional railway manager (DRM) of
Trichy has constituted a committee to inquire into Wednesday's incident of two locomotives going out of control and moving without a pilot for 10 kilometres on the Trichy-Erode section .

The DRM also suspended the shunting driver who was on duty when the incident took place. Initial investigation has revealed that human error may have been the reason behind the incident which gave tense moments to railway officials, sources said.

The suspension was ordered after conducting a preliminary inquiry as per the norms of the railway board.

The committee which will hold the detailed inquiry comprises senior officials from mechanical, signal and safety wings. The locos that went unmanned for 10 kilometres luckily did not cause any accident.

The preliminary probe found fault with the shunting loco pilot's action of getting down from the engine during the incident instead of remaining in the cabin.

However, some senior officials commended his quick reaction of informing the station manager and his subsequent efforts to bring the loco to a halt. On the basis of the shunting pilot's message, the station manager had sent a red signal alarm to all station managers along the Trichy-Erode section.

According to sources in the railway administration, the inquiry will examine if it was a human error or a mechanical failure which led to the locos going unmanned and stopping near the Mutharasanallur railway station.

Udayshankar, the shunting pilot, had told the higher officials during the inquiry that failure of the braking system was the sole cause of the incident and that he had tried his best to stop the loco. Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was convened by the safety department where senior officials discussed the incident.

The inquiry panel is expected to submit its final report by June 5.

Soon, free shuttle service from Trichy railway station

The Trichy railway division authorities have proposed to introduce shuttle service for passengers to and from the Trichy railway station. The services, which will be free, will operate from the station till the roundabout near the steam-loco put on display. Each bus can carry at least 25 people and will operate non-stop.

A Chennai-based firm has been contracted to run the service. Two buses, which will be battery operated, can each carry 25 people and luggage from the railway station platform to the main entrance roundabout and vice-versa. "Differently-abled, senior citizen and ailing persons can utilise the service to reach their respective platforms from the entrance where they alight from the bus," he added.

"On an average, Trichy railway station daily receives footfalls of 30,000 passengers, as a number of trains cross the station with many express and passenger trains.

Since most of the passengers reach the station by city buses, they have to walk from the main entrance to the platform. To facilitate passengers, the railway has taken this initiative," a senior official stated.

No money would be collected from the passengers for the service. The operator would carry advertisements on the bus for generating revenue, the official said.

"The city buses which are currently coming inside the station would gradually be stopped. It has also been decided to use the second entry for this purpose once the ongoing construction on the foot over-bridge is completed," he added.
