Dunno if the concept pictures represent travel conditions in India. So much vacant space, lounges etc. in a train with chair car.

Of course, we can trust ICF to do a good job, but I think we will see a heavily re-designed version of these coaches as far as the interiors are concerned, it won't be as spacious as in the above pics.

Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factor in Chennai is making India's most anticipated indigenously-built semi-high speed 'Train-18'. The ICF officials are expecting to roll out the first set of the luxury train for trial purposes around mid-October.

Indian Railways: The first set of Train 18 will have 16 chair-car coaches -consisting of two executive chair cars and 14 non-executive chair cars.

The engine-less train is expected to replace the Shatabdi Express trains and the will be put on trial first.

The first set of the Train-18 may replace Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express.

The ICF will be rolling out the Train 18 in a record time of around 20 months while it takes around three years to build such train anywhere in the world.

Indian Railways' Train-18 is self-propelled on electric-traction and does not require an engine to pull it.

The train will have automatic sliding doors for entry into one coach from other. The gangway of Train 18 will be fully sealed just like Metro trains.

Like Indian Railways other premium trains, the Train 18 will be fully AC chair car with separate footrest for each seat. Even the driver's cabin is fully AC.

Train 18's executive class coaches will have 360-degree rotatable chairs which can be aligned in the direction of the train.

Germany on Monday rolled out the world’s first hydrogen-powered train, signalling the start of a push to challenge the might of polluting diesel trains with costlier but eco-friendly technology.

Two bright blue Coradia iLint trains, built by French TGV-maker Alstom, began running a 100 km (62-mile) route between the towns and cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude in northern Germany -- a stretch normally plied by diesel trains.

Zero emission

“The world’s first hydrogen train is entering into commercial service and is ready for serial production,” Alstom CEO Henri Poupart-Lafarge said at an unveiling ceremony in Bremervoerde, the station where the trains will be refuelled with hydrogen.

Alstom has said it plans to deliver another 14 of the zero-emissions trains to Lower Saxony by 2021, with other German States also expressing an interest.

Hydrogen trains are equipped with fuel cells that produce electricity through a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, a process that leaves steam and water as the only emissions.

A quiet alternative

Excess energy is stored in ion lithium batteries on board the train.

The Coradia iLint trains can run for around 1,000 km on a single tank of hydrogen, similar to the range of diesel trains.

Alstom is betting on the technology as a greener and quieter alternative to diesel on non-electrified railway lines — an attractive prospect to many German cities scrambling to combat air pollution.

“Sure, buying a hydrogen train is somewhat more expensive than a diesel train, but it is cheaper to run,” Stefan Schrank, the project’s manager at Alstom, said.

Other countries are also looking into hydrogen trains, Alstom said, including Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Italy and Canada.

In France, the government has already said it wants the first hydrogen train to be on the rails by 2022.

பெரம்பூர் ரெயில் பெட்டி தொழிற்சாலையில் வடிவமைத்து தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட ‘ரெயில்-18’ என்ற நவீன வசதி கொண்ட விரைவு ரெயில் தயார் நிலையில் உள்ளது. மணிக்கு 160 கி.மீ. வேகத்தில் செல்லும் இந்த ரெயிலின் சோதனை ஓட்டம் அடுத்த மாதம் (அக்டோபர்) நடத்தப்படுகிறது.

சென்னை,

இந்தியாவில் முதன் முறையாக 16 பெட்டிகளை கொண்ட அதிவிரைவு ரெயிலை சென்னை, பெரம்பூரில் உள்ள ரெயில் பெட்டி தொழிற்சாலை(ஐ.சி.எப்.) வடிவமைத்து தயாரித்து உள்ளது. நடப்பு ஆண்டில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு இருப்பதால் இந்த ரெயிலுக்கு ‘ரெயில்-18’ என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

நாட்டில் தற்போது இயக்கத்தில் உள்ள ‘சதாப்தி’ போல, பெருநகரங்களுக்கு இடையே இயக்கப்படும் ரெயில்களுக்கு பதிலாக இந்த புதுவடிவ ரெயில் இயக்கப்பட உள்ளது. இந்த ரெயில் அதிகபட்சமாக மணிக்கு 160 கி.மீ. வேகத்தில் செல்லும்.

இந்த ரெயிலுக்கு என்று தனியாக என்ஜின் அமைக்கப்படவில்லை. புறநகர் மின்சார ரெயில்களில் இருப்பது போன்று ரெயிலில் முன்புறமும், பின்புறமும் டிரைவர் அறை மட்டும் அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கிறது. 2 பெட்டிகளுக்கு ஒரு மின்சார மோட்டார் வீதம் ரெயிலை இயக்குவதற்கான மின்சார மோட்டார்கள் ரெயில் பெட்டியின் கீழ் அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன. முதன் முறையாக நெடுந்தொலைவு மற்றும் புறநகர் ரெயில்களுக்கு இந்த முறை அமல்படுத்தப்பட உள்ளது.

இந்த ரெயிலில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் எளிதாக ரெயில் பெட்டிக்குள் செல்லும் வகையில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. குறிப்பாக சக்கர நாற்காலியில் அமர்ந்தபடி நடைமேடையில் இருந்து ரெயிலுக்கு உள்ளே செல்ல முடியும். இதற்காக தானியங்கி கதவுகள் மற்றும் நகரும் படித் தகடுகள் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

நகரும் படித் தகடுகள், ரெயில் நின்ற உடன் தானாகவே வெளியே வந்து ரெயில் பெட்டிக்கும், நடைமேடைக்கும் இடையே உள்ள இடைவெளியை மூடிவிடும். பயணிகள் ரெயிலில் ஏறும்போதும், இறங்கும்போதும் தவறி தண்டவாளத்தில் விழாமல் இருக்க இது உதவும். மேலும் ரெயில் நிறுத்தப்பட்ட பின்னர் தானியங்கி கதவுகள் திறக்கும். அதுபோலவே அனைத்து தானியங்கி கதவுகளும் மூடிய பிறகே ரெயில் புறப்படும். இதனால் பெருமளவு விபத்துகள் தவிர்க்கப்படும்.

இந்த ரெயிலில் உள்ள 16 பெட்டிகளும் குளிர்சாதன வசதியுடன் கூடிய உட்காரும் இருக்கைகள் (ஏ.சி.சேர் கார்) கொண்டவை ஆகும். வை-பை வசதி, ஒவ்வொரு இருக்கையின் கீழ் செல்போனை சார்ஜ் செய்யும் வசதி மற்றும் சாய்வு வசதி கொண்ட உட்காரும் இருக்கைகள், விமானங்களில் இருப்பது போல் படிப்பதற்கு உதவும் சுழலும் விளக்குகள், பயோ கழிப்பறைகளும் அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன.

ரெயிலின் வெளிப்பகுதியில் இருக்கும் தட்பவெப்ப நிலைக்கு ஏற்ப குளிர்வசதியை தானாகவே ரெயிலின் அமைப்பு சரி செய்து கொள்ளும். ரெயிலின் வெளிப்புறம் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள கண்ணாடிகள் ஒன்றன் மீது ஒன்று இணைக்கப்பட்டு இருப்பதால் கண்ணைக் கவரும் வகையில் அமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. அதேபோல் ரெயில் பெட்டிகளை இணைக்கும் இணைப்புகளும் வெளியே தெரியாத வகையில் முழுமையாக மூடப்பட்டு இருக்கும்.

இதனால் ரெயிலின் உட்புறம் ஆரம்பத்தில் இருந்து முடிவு பகுதி வரை செல்ல முடியும். இந்த ரெயில் மத்திய அரசின் ‘மேக் இன் இந்தியா’ திட்டத்தின் கீழ் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டது. குறிப்பாக 80 சதவீதம் உள்நாட்டு கருவிகள் மூலம் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதுபோன்ற ஒரு ரெயிலை வெளிநாடுகளில் இருந்து இறக்குமதி செய்வதாக இருந்தால் சுமார் ரூ.150 முதல் ரூ.175 கோடி வரை செலவிட வேண்டி வரும். ஆனால் பெரம்பூர் ரெயில் பெட்டி தொழிற்சாலையில் இந்த ரெயில் ரூ.100 கோடி மதிப்பில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

இதேபோல் ரெயில் தயாரிப்பதற்கு வெளிநாடுகளில் 3 முதல் 4 ஆண்டுகள் வரை ஆகும். ஆனால் இங்கு 18 மாதத்தில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. அடுத்த மாதம் (அக்டோபர்) 2-வது வாரம் இந்த ரெயில் சோதனை ஓட்டம் நடத்தப்படுகிறது. இந்த ரெயில் முதன் முதலாக மத்தியபிரதேச தலைநகர் போபால்- டெல்லி இடையே இயக்கப்பட இருக்கிறது.

என்ஜின் தனியாக இல்லாததால் சேரும் இடத்தை அடைந்த உடன் அப்படியே மறுமுனையில் இருந்து மீண்டும் இயக்க முடியும். இதனால் என்ஜினை கழற்றி மாட்டுவது போன்றவற்றுக்காக ஏற்படும் காலதாமதம் தவிர்க்கப்படுகிறது. ரெயில் இயக்கத்தின்போது ஏற்படும் அதிர்வை உட்புறம் உணராமல் இருப்பதற்காக நவீன கருவிகளும் பொருத்தப்பட்டு உள்ளன.

துருப்பிடிக்காத வகையில் ரெயில் பெட்டிகள் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன. பயணிகளை கவரும் வகையில் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. மேற்கண்ட தகவலை பெரம்பூர் ரெயில் பெட்டி தொழிற்சாலை அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்து உள்ளனர்.

சிறப்பம்சம் என்னவென்றால், இந்த ரயிலுக்கு தனியாக இன்ஜின் இருக்காது. புறநகர் ரயில்களில் உள்ளதுபோல முன்புறமும் பின்புறமும் ஓட்டுநர்கள் இருப்பார்கள். ரயிலை இயங்குவதற்கான மின்சார மோட்டார்கள் பெட்டிகளின் அடியில் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.

முதன்முறையாக, நெடுந்தொலைவு ரயில்கள் தனியாக இன்ஜின் இல்லாமல் இயக்கப்படுகிறது. மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் எளிதாக ஏறி இறங்கும் வகையில், தானியங்கிக் கதவுகள், நகரும் படிக்கட்டுகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. நடைமேடைக்கு வந்தவுடன் தானாகவே படிக்கட்டுகள் திறந்து, நடைமேடைக்கும் ரயிலுக்கும் உள்ள இடைவெளியை மறைத்துவிடும். இதனால், பயணிகள் தண்டவாளத்தில் தவறி விழுவதுபோன்ற அசம்பாவிதங்கள் தடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

16 பெட்டிகளும் குளிர்சாதன வசதி செய்யப்பட்டவை. வைஃபை, செல்போன் சார்ஜ் வசதியும் உண்டு. இருக்கைகள் புஷ்பேக் வசதி கொண்டவை. புத்தகம் படிப்பதற்குச் சுழலும் விளக்குகள், பயோ கழிப்பறை வசதிகள் கொண்ட பெட்டிகள் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. வெளிப்புறத்தில் உள்ள தட்பவெப்பச் சூழலுக்கு ஏற்ப உள்பகுதியில் தானாகவே குளிர் குறைவும், கூடவும் செய்யும் தொழில்நுட்பத்தில் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

18 மாதங்களில் இதைத் தயாரித்து, ஐ.சி.எஃப் சாதனை படைத்துள்ளது. மணிக்கு 160 கி.மீ வேகத்தில் பறக்கும் இந்த ரயிலைத் தயாரிக்க ரூ.100 கோடி செலவாகியுள்ளது. டெல்லியில் இருந்து போபால் வரை முதன்முதலாக இயக்கப்படும் இந்த ரயில், அடுத்த மாதத்தில் சோதனை ஓட்டம் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும். சதாப்திக்கு மாற்றாக இது வர உள்ளது.

Train 18 is Indian Railways’ latest service that will replace India’s fastest Shatabdi Express train on the Delhi-Bhopal route from January 2019. Being manufactured at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Chennai, Train 18 will be a special train for several reasons – the ‘Make in India’ train set will be able to travel at speeds of 160 kmph, it will have modular European-style seats, automatic doors with sliding footsteps, fully-sealed gangways, continuous windows for panoramic experience etc. But the most important feature, that will mark a technological shift for Indian Railways, and will be the first step to the future of train travel in India, is the fact that Train 18 will run without an engine! This new Train 18, codenamed after the year it is being made in, will be a self-propelled train set – a first for Indian Railways for inter-city travel.

So, how will Train 18 run without an engine?

To put it simply, Train 18 will be like the metro trains and EMUs that run in cities or the suburban networks without a locomotive hauling them. However, in case of Train 18 the technological evolution of the concept is more complex since it also involves capability of running at 160 kmph. Train 18 will have a driving cabin at both ends, hence eliminating the need to reverse the train set, once it reaches its final destination. According to ICF officials that FE Online spoke to, the concept of distributed power trainset for a mainline express service is a new ballgame!

To adopt the new concept, the traction system and power required for lighting and air-conditioning on the train had to be modularised and distributed across the train set as underslung, that is below the chasis of the coaches. In conventional LHB coaches, the traction system is part of the locomotive and the power for lights and air-conditioning is supplied by separate generator power cars. This new concept required development of a new design of the coach, bogies and electrical equipment.

An ICF official told Financial Express Online that most suburban trains run at 100 kmph, where as in Train 18, the technology is more complex since it is required to run at 160 kmph. “Unlike the suburban EMUs, the propulsion system will be underslung completely for Train 18 and the train set will be vestibule, that is inter-connected,” the official said.

Explaining how Train 18 will run without an engine, the ICF official said, “In Train 18, every alternate coach will be powered /motorized. It will be be called a motor coach. Each motor coach will have four 3-phase traction motors of rating 250 kw, approximately making the total rating of the motor coach – 1000 KW ( 1340 HP).” “For the 16-car train set, this will work out to 8 motor coaches × 1340 HP = 10,720 HP. This will be the power available for traction apart from the air-conditioning and other auxiliary electric loads. Two motor coaches will get power from one transformer mounted on the TC (trailer coach),” the official told FE Online.

Train 18, an all air-conditioned chair car, is expected to roll out in October – after which it will be handed over to the RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation). RDSO will extensively test the new Train 18 before it is declared fit for service on the Indian Railways network. The Indian Railways are set to launch their ‘Make in India’ smart coaches with new features like black box and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered CCTVs, matching international standards.

Named ‘Smart Trains’, the coaches have been equipped with sensors that can detect defects on bearings, wheels, and the railway track, giving constant inputs to those in the control room to avoid accidents, carry out maintenance, and to improve efficiency of operations.

The maiden smart coach was unveiled at the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli on Tuesday as part of launching 100 such trains in a pilot project to improve the safety and security of commuters, and to boost efficiency.

The black box, being introduced for the first time by Indian Railways, has a powerful multi-dimensional communication interface to provide information on passengers and coach condition on real-time basis.

The black box will act as a coach control unit with communication interfaces for passenger announcements, GPS-based announcement triggers, emergency intercom for commuters, digital destination boards, train reservation display modules, and CCTVs with remote monitoring.

The modern infotainment system has been installed to locate the train in real time. AI-powered CCTVs will help those in the control room to keep a tab on untoward incidents and on the behaviour of on-board staff. Commuters will also be able to communicate with Railways officials.

For wheel, coach and track monitoring, Railways have come up with Internet of things-based system. The vibrating-energy-based sensors will monitor the wheels, bearing and hard spots on the track, and will provide data through GPS/GPRS to the remote server for diagnosis and remedial measures.

The Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU), an industrial grade computer, will monitor the coach maintenance and passenger interface.

CCTV recording

Six cameras installed in the coach will provide live recording. The footage can be accessed from the control room, which will be advantageous for law enforcers.

An emergency talk-back system will enable communication between passengers and the guard during a crisis. A Wi-Fi hotspot information system is another innovative feature.

Smart coaches are also laden with water-level indicator technology to know whether the water in the coach is sufficient and when it needs to be filled. An SMS will be sent to the next watering station when the water level falls below half the coach capacity.

Train 18, India’s first engine-less train for inter-city travel, has been in news ever since it was first announced last year. Being manufactured in a record time of 18-20 months, Train 18 is Indian Railways’ first world-class train – it has a cool swanky exterior and plush interiors that would offer an experience very different from the one passengers currently get in Shatabdi Express trains. The semi-high speed ‘Make in India’ self-propelled Train 18 is the way forward for Indian Railways and the train set will likely replace India’s fastest Shatabdi Express between Delhi and Bhopal. Financial Express Online brings you some exclusive images of how Train 18, which will roll out in October, is being manufactured at Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.

Train 18 is a flagship train set, the first prototype, which will be modified for subsequent production based on the feedback from RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) which will test it extensively for three months. Train 18 will be able to achieve speeds of 160 kmph and will boast of an underslung propulsion system. Train 18 will have an aerodynamic (nose cone) driver’s cabin at both ends.

The self-propulsion system eliminates the need for a locomotive to haul the train, hence reducing the turnaround time of the train at terminal stations. Every alternative coach is motorized, to ensure even distribution of motive power and faster acceleration/deceleration – another factor that will save time during train travel. The traction motor will be part of the high-speed bogie. Train 18 is also equipped with an advanced state-of-the art suspension system aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe journey for the passengers.

The 16-coach Train 18 will be an all air-conditioned chair car with both Executive and non-executive coaches. In the Executive chair car coaches, passengers will be able to rotate the seats in the direction of the train movement.

Like most global trains, Train 18 will have continuous windows for better viewing experience. The train set will also have automatic doors with sliding footsteps which will open only once the train reaches the platform and is stationary. As the images suggest, Train 18 will sport a colour scheme of white and blue.

Other prominent features of the train include; diffused LED lighting, European-style seats, disabled-friendly wheelchair parking spaces, on-board Wifi infotainment, GPS-based passenger information system, modern pantry with better heating and chilling equipment, personalised reading lights, fully-sealed gangways for easy movement, automatic sliding doors inside the cabins, intelligent air-conditioning system, emergency talk back units for passengers, CCTVs, charging points beneath every seat, concealed roller blinds and modular luggage rack with glass bottom. PWD passengers will be able to enter the driving trailer coach using their wheel chairs. Train 18 will have modular, disabled-friendly toilets, that will have auto-sensor fittings.

According to ICF, Train 18 is being manufactured at an approximate cost of Rs 100 crore per rake and eventually once mass production starts the cost will come down further.

First Made-in-India engineless train gets on track for trial run

The first train set conceptualised, designed and manufactured completely in India, which looks like a bullet train, will be released for trial in a week’s time.

A train set is a rake which is self-propelled and does not need an locomotive, said Sudhanshu Mani, general manager of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) which has designed and manufactured the train set, known as Train-18, at a cost of ₹100 crore.

A second rake would be ready by March, with costs expected to reduce as more rakes are manufactured.

Built for a quick intra-day travel on Shatabdi Express routes like Delhi-Bhopal, Chennai-Bengaluru and Mumbai-Ahmedabad, the sixteen-coach train has the latest amenities (see box) and can cut down on travel time by 10-15%.

The train has better acceleration than conventional trains as it has 50% more power and is equipped with a smart braking system consisting of regenerative and electro-pneumatic braking imported from Hungary.

“This is one of the most ambitious Make in India concepts. By developing it completely in India, we have saved on the cost of technology transfer from a foreign country that is usually the norm,” Mani said. An imported rake of similar characteristics would have cost ₹170 crore, he said. Established private companies in India would have taken 36 months to deliver a similar product, he added.

Two executive class coaches in the centre of the train have seats which can rotate by 360 degrees, giving passengers the option of enjoying a straight-on view of the scenery. These seats have been air-lifted from Spain; apart from the braking system and transformers, these are the only imported components, say officials.

For the first time, passengers would be able to knock on the doors of the driver and also have a look at the panel, as the train has a continuous profile.

The train’s speed test would be conducted on the Moradabad-Bareilly and Kota-Sawai Madhopur stretch next month, said officials.
