Ramps near rail track to reduce elephant deaths
Author: V.S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: In a bid to eliminate incidence of elephant deaths on tracks, the Forest Department has started constructing ramps on either side of the track B on the Madukkarai–Walayar section of the Coimbatore–Palakkad line. The facility will be ready in 15 days.
Since 1978, 17 elephants had died in 12 accidents along the 16.25-km-long track A and 18-km-long track B along the stretch of Podanur–Palakkad section. After a couple of elephant deaths in the last two months, a study of the accident-prone spots and the behavioural pattern of the jumbos was taken up through camera trap images.
Elephants were found to be crossing the railway track to reach a water body. In addition, the 25-ft elevation on both sides of the track forced the jumbos to slow down on the track and ascend or descend the gradient, said A. Periasamy, Divisional Forest Officer.
The ramps will provide a gentle slope making it easy for animals to climb and descend from the height, he says. ACC cements at Madukkarai has offered to provide cement waste for forming the base for the ramp which will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 6 lakh.
On completion of the ramps, cameras will be installed to study the behavioural pattern of the elephants. Based on feedback, a decision would be taken on constructing ramps at other vulnerable stretches with improvements and modifications if required, he said.

Water trough near hills

The Forest Department is also creating a water trough near the hills. This will prevent or reduce instances of elephants crossing the track to reach the water body, the DFO said.
Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has already cleared vegetation on the sides of the track at curves to enhance visibility for the loco pilot. A request has been made to clear the vegetation along the tracks for a further distance of 3 km, Mr. Periasamy said. The number of boards alongside the tracks to caution loco pilots to slow down is also being increased, he added.

Dear All,

A day express between Chennai and Coimbatore through VRI, SLM is a long pending issue. Although assurance were given many a times by the Railway Authority for introducing a day express in this line , nothing has happened so far. This will benefit a large number of business sector besides students and office goers. Also this will pave a new opportunity for textile traders in Villupuram, Pondicherry, Neyveli,Attur,Chinna Salem, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore to get the direct benefit of linking these places with Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur. They are by and large depending on the intermediary agents for their procurement.

Will the new Divisional Manager Mr.Hari Shankar Verma, please look into the above and do the needful. Earlier much has been said but nothing happened.

Also, introduction of a passenger between Pondicherry and Coimbatore will benefit a lot at both ends.

Politicians are supporting more for many other projects but not for many needy services in the existing lines. Please give a thought on that.

Murali

Call to regularize Erode-Chennai train service

The recently introduced Erode - Salem - Chennai Egmore day time special train has brought cheer to both the Railway authorities and commuters alike

Encouraged by the good response to the recently introduced Erode - Salem - Attur - Chennai Egmore day time express train on a trial basis, various associations have urged the Southern Railway to regularise the service.

A day-time inter-city express from Salem to Chennai Egmore via Attur was a long pending demand of the commuters of the western districts.

In the absence of a day time train, the commuters of major trading centres such as Attur and Vazhappadi had to depend on buses, which plied on circuitous route.

The Southern Railway announced the introduction of day time special train on an experimental basis from September 23 till November- end.

This train is being operated on five days in a week - Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Hari Shankar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, hinted that this service will in probability become a regular service if it enjoyed a good patronage.

The reserved ticket fare is Rs. 145 from Salem to Chennai (unreserved fare Rs. 115).

“About 40 passengers board this train at Salem Town, Vazhappadi, Attur and Chinnasalem to Chennai”, says a senior officer of the Salem Railway Division. In the return direction too more than 70 passengers alight at Attur alone, he adds.

The commuters are happy that this train has enabled the people of Salem and Erode districts in reaching destinations such as Villupuram, Melmaruvathur, Tindivanam, Chengalpattu and Tambaram during day time.

Various organisations have taken steps for popularising this train among commuters by displaying flex boards and banners and distributing pamphlets containing details of the train timings and fare to sustain the service.

L. R. C. Ravishankar, president of the Attur Chamber of Commerce, said that the response to this service from the very beginning has been very encouraging. Even, service enjoys more patronage than the night service in this section, he adds.

The Chamber has distributed pamphlets and has been campaigning among the local trading community to take full advantage of this train, Mr. Ravishankar said. He urged the Railways to regularise this service and also ply it as an inter-city express.

During the so called "students" protest for jallikattu in Madurai, the protesters
detained a train over VAIGAI bridge for more than five days. Neither the driver nor the SR administration cared about the train which was detained. Obviously the driver has to abandon the engine, but SR must take action to bring back the train either to Koodalnagar or else where for the safety of the Engine. Nothing is done. This resulted in a loss of INR 75 lakhs to one crore.
Similar incident of detaining Karaikal bound train from Bengaluru at Salem happened. There the miscreants damaged heavily the engine.
Both the State Administration and SR is to be blamed for not initiating action to safeguard the engine atleast by the way of posting GPF to safeguard the trains

Dear All,

Many passenger trains are being cancelled in Tamilnadu. Trains which were introduced as Tri Weekly are running once in a week.

Salem -Vridachalam line is being ignored every time. No new trains .....cancellation of existing trains,,, If low revenue is the factor, why should they go for a project of linking Chinna salem with Kallakurichi. What additional revenue it can generate. It will only add up the loss.

Instead of doing that , they can go for electrification of Salem -Vridachalam line. This will be a permanent solution for logo reversal and North India bound trains from Southern Districts can be diverted through this track This will ease the pressure on Salem - Jolarpettai-katpadi- Chennai line and will be an alternate line at all times.

Capital is precious and projects which requires immediate attention needs to be prioritized and investments should not be on political motive.

Similarly, linking Tiruchirapalli & Attur Via Perambalur will be a boon for goods traffic and will pave development of backward areas of Ariyalur & Perambalur Districts. But no move in that direction by the State or the centre?

Will RAIL LINK to Perambalur will be considered at least this year??/?

Hi Murali,

The survey is changed... Actually the plan of linking Perambalur, Ariyalur is via Namakkal and not Attur. It is a part of Karaikal - Salem survey.

‘More amenities at Karur railway junction’

The Karur railway station would be provided with more amenities, the Divisional Railway Manager, Salem U.Subba Rao said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters at Karur railway junction, Mr. Subba Rao said new catering stalls, a deluxe pay and use toilet and a cloak room would come up at Karur railway junction.

Replying to a query, Mr. Subba Rao said the Salem Division had proposed to attach an extra coach in the Tiruchi - Palakkad Town passenger.

There has been demand for extension of the Chennai Egmore - Salem express train up to Karur. The demand has been forwarded to the Southern Railway headquarters for approval, Mr. Rao said.

Earlier, Mr. Rao accompanied by senior divisional railway officers inspected the stretch from Erode to Karur.

The Divisional Railway Manager inspected various ongoing projects and passenger amenities over the section.

While conducting inspection at Kodumudi station, the Divisional Railway Manager directed officials to provide vehicle parking stand in the circulating area of the main entrance and extension of shelters in both platforms.
