Nagercoil stationgets an escalator

Kanyakumari: Union minister of state Pon Radhakrishnan inaugurated the newly-installed escalator on platform number 1 at Nagercoil Junction railway station in Kanyakumari on Monday.

Addressing media persons later, the minister said that the escalator facility has been installed at a cost of Rs 1 crore by the Thiruvananthapuram Railway division keeping in mind the long-standing demand of passengers and that the facility will be soon extended to platforms 2 and 3. He said that an ATM facility will also be installed at the station. Radhakrishnan said that the demand for track doubling between Chennai and Kanyakumari has been forwarded to the Ministry of Railways.

Meanwhile, rail user forums have urged the Union minister take up the matter of constructing a new terminal at Kanyakumari station and improve facilities at Nagercoil junction as promised by then railway minister Sadananda Gowda in the railway budget 2014 -15. The Kanyakumari District Rail Users' Association expressed concern over multiple demands for additional train services from Kanniyakumari being turned down citing lack of space at Kanniyakumari and Nagercoil.

Unfair fare system

Southern Railway is going to operate Suvidha special trains between Chennai Egmore and Tirunelveli from May 20 to 29. Full adult fare is charged for all passengers irrespective of their age and no concession is applicable in these trains. The initial fare for any class and for any destination is the base fare of an express train plus tatkal charge. When availability of berths comes down the fare increases proportionally. The fare for the last 20 per cent of the total berths for any class is three times the base fare plus tatkal charge. Indian Railways is a government organisation and it is unfair to collect such an exorbitant amount from passengers for the same distance with same facilities.

In the interest of the public, the railway authorities should reconsider the Suvidha special train fare system.

P. Victor Selvaraj,

Extend special trains
I am happy to know that the Southern Railway has announced special trains between Tirunelveli and Chennai Egmore to clear extra rush of traffic during summer vacation.

Certainly, it is a welcome move. But if the trains are extended up to Kanyakumari or at least Nagercoil, more people will be benefitted. I request the Southern Railway to extend the Suvidha special trains up to Kanyakumari or Nagercoil.

S.J. Sylvestine,

Kootttapuly.

Upcoming railway timetable renews hopes of new additions

The much-awaited release of the railway timetable, which is usually done in the first week of July every year, is likely to come out in October, but that hasn't stopped the hopes of railway enthusiasts and forums in the region whether any of their demands have been fulfilled. Though the region is still in the process to get seamless doubling of lines from Chennai to Madurai and beyond, major infrastructure works were completed in the last financial year indicating that many new trains would be introduced in the upcoming timetable.

In Kanyakumari district, a three-year demand by passengers seeking the extension of Trichy - Tirunelveli Intercity Express towards Nagercoil as there are no trains connecting Kanyakumari district with the rest of Tamil Nadu during day is yet to be fulfilled. Similarly, the Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association has appealed for the extension of Thiruvananthapuram - Mangalore Express till Kanyakumari and introduction of a daily train between Thiruvananthapuram and Velankanni and a superfast daily between Nagercoil and Chennai. "We have been asking for these trains for many years together and hopefully there will be some extensions at least," said S R Sreeram, president of the association.

In last financial year, broad gauge conversion works were completed between Pollachi and Palakkad. Divisional railway manager, Sunil Kumar Garg told mediapersons recently that a proposal has been put forth during the timetable meeting held in Chennai for a train from Rameswaram towards the Konkan stretch and hopefully the division will get the connectivity shortly.

Similarly, the division has completed yard remodelling works at Shencottah station. Passengers in Aruppukottai region for long have been demanding the extension of Chennai Egmore - Manamadurai Silambu Express towards Shencottah via Aruppukottai.

Kanniyakumari neglected by railways, says Congress

FOR A FAIR DEAL:Congress cadres staging a demonstration in front of the Nagercoil railway station on Monday.

Even though Kanniyakumari is represented by a union minister in the Central government, new trains have not been introduced to serve the district in the last three years, according to Congress leaders.

Leading an agitation in front of the Nagercoil Junction here on Monday, R. Radhakrishnan, party president, Kanniyakumari East, said the Congress government had introduced 20 trains to serve the district over the years. The Bharatiya Janata Party government had also failed to take the initiative to lay Kanniyakumari-Tiruchendur-Thoothukudi and Aalur-Chettikulam new lines, surveys for which were conducted during the Congress rule.

Though track doubling between Madurai and Kanniyaumari was sanctioned during the previous railway budget, the work had not been started yet. Though the railways was earning Rs. 40 crore from Kanniyakumari district, it had been neglected by the Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway, Mr. Radhakrishnan said.

Other demands

The party’s other demands were:
introduction of a daily night train between Kanniyakumari and Mangalore via Thiruvananthapuram;
extension of Tiruchi-Tirunelveli Inter-City Express to Thiruvananthapuram;
and new daily train between Nagercoil and Ch
ennai.

Colachel MLA J.G. Prince and other leaders from the Congress participated in the protest.

Hi Jegan, is the majority demand from NCJ-CAPE only or mainly towards TVC-MAQ or beyond to Mumbai/Gujarat/Rajasthan. In fact even to Delhi/Punjab/Haryana plus J&K, there is only one service from NCJ/CAPE in the form of 16317/18 Himsagar and twice a week in the form of 12641/42 Thirukkural. Then to Gujarat, there is only one service namely 16335/36 GIM express. NCJ has no connection with Somnath/Veraval, Okha/Porbandar or indeed with Ajmer/Jaipur/Bikaner/Jodhpur. To all these places there are trains originating from TVC.

Ok fine, if they cannot be extended to these parts, but I feel in case you can manage a service to Delhi with slightly circuitous route namely one mimicking the route of 16311 TVC-Bikaner exp. which also touches Jodhpur I think it will solve a lot of connectivity issues of NCJ both with Maharashtra Gujarat, but also with Rajasthan/Haryana and Delhi. This train can run up to Bikaner via Jodhpur after which it can come towards Delhi on the same route as taken by trains like Rajasthan SK which runs via Jaipur.

However, I am aware that 16311/12 has a three night journey and it could be very exhausting for passengers, so better to have an SFE like the Bikaner-CBE express which is at least faster, such a service can, if preferred by NCJ pax via TVC-SRR-MAQ or via MDU-DG-CBE-Konkan. But definitely, a limited stop SFE service is required which covers NCJ-Delhi through SRR-MAQ-MAO-Ratnagiri-PNVL-ST-BRC-ADI-JU-BKN-JP-Alwar-Gurgaon-Delhi in less than 60 hrs. Kochuveli-BKN on the route of 16311 is itself 3002 kms. and to Delhi you can add another 450-odd kms. so roughly 3500 kms. (or less than 3600 kms.) need to be covered by this train in 60 hrs. or less. Further, as and when BKN-JU-JP-Delhi line gets doubled/electrified, this train can be speeded up further.

‘Increase platform height at railway station’

Former Minister submits petition to DRM

Former Minister and Nagercoil MLA N. Suresh Rajan (DMK) has urged Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railway to improve basic infrastructure and increase the height of platform at Nagercoil Town railway station.

Mr. Suresh Rajan submitted a petition to Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager Prakash Butani in this regard on Tuesday. Mr. Suresh Rajan told The Hindu that in the petition he highlighted the lack of infrastructure facilities at Nagercoil Town station and Nagercoil Junction.

Passengers found it difficult to board express and super fast trains in the absence of raised platforms at Nagercoil Town station, which also lacked shelter and waiting room for passengers, safe drinking water and toilet facilities.

Passengers had fallen off trains while boarding and alighting, which had even resulted in death.

Mr. Suresh Rajan said Nagercoil Junction, which recorded an annual revenue of Rs. 53 crore and came under ‘A’ grade category station, needed additional platforms.

He also demanded expedition of track doubling between Madurai and Nagercoil, introduction of a new super fast train between Nagercoil and Chennai or regularisation of Thirukkural Express (Weekly) as a daily train, and increase in the speed of Ananthapuri Express.
