Madurai - Manamadurai - Rameswaram Electrification

Railways agrees for electrification in Madurai-Rameswaram sector: MP
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE HINDU
SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 19:20 IST
Ramanathapuram

Southern Railway has agreed for electrification in the Madurai–Rameswaram sector and introduce two new trains — bi-weekly express between Ernakulam and Rameswaram and bi-weekly express between Mangalore junction and Rameswaram, local MP A. Anwhar Raajhaa has said.

Giving details of the deliberations at the meeting of the Members of Parliament of the region served by Madurai division, chaired by Southern Railway General Manager R.K. Kulshrestha in Madurai on Tuesday, Mr. Raajhaa said the electrification would help to enhance train services.

He said the railway board had sanctioned the electrification and sanctioned a sum of ₹185.37 crore. The work would commence immediately, he said. On introduction of DEMU services, the officials said that there were no maintenance facilities for DEMU rakes either at Madurai or at Rameswaram and it was operationally not feasible.

He, however, pitched hard for the service, stating if the Southern Railway could operate DEMU services in the Virudhunagar – Tiruchi and Manamadurai – Mannargudi sectors, why not in the Rameswaram – Madurai sector.

He also pressed for daytime express between Rameswaram and Chennai and naming it after former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam but the officials said it was not feasible to run new trains in the sector for the present.

When he pressed for the re-introduction of the Rameswaram Coimbatore daily express and three pairs of Rameswaram – Palakkad passenger trains, the officials said Southern Railway proposed bi-weekly train from Mangalore junction to Rameswaram via Madurai – Dindigul, Palani – Pollachi – Podanur – Palakkad.

It also proposed a new bi-weekly train between Ernakulam and Rameswaram via Madurai – Dindigul – Palani – Pollachi – Palakkad. Railway board’s orders were awaited for the two trains, he said quoting the officials.

The MP said the officials had agreed to provide stoppages for the two express trains between Rameswaram and Chennai at Uchipuli after upgrading the platform. They had also agreed to enhance passenger amenities in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram railway stations, he said.

Happy to see new Madurai - Rameswaram Electrification project announcement with mention about works would start immediately ...

It is obvious that WITHOUT POLITICAL INTERVENTION Rlys does amazing works, what is REQUIRED/ what is NECESSARY ... To point out, this MDU RMM electrification project has not been 'demanded' or 'highlighted' by any association/ MP or the like ...

Being Electrification promoted, Electrification Surveys for ALL current non-electric tracks in Tamil Nadu have been called on this jan 2018... All these surveys would have been completed by now...

While SA division is taking ED - KRR - TPJ, SA - KRR - DG electrification, TPJ division is undertaking TPJ - KIK/ VLNK electrification, according to me, MDU division would have taken this MDU - RMM electrification one as priority ...

I thought, MDU division would take electrification of TEN - TCN and DG - POY - PGT first and then VPT - SCT ... As GOC having shed of diesel locos, I thought MDU / TPJ - MNM - RMM would be the last section to be electrified ...

In this MDU - RMM electrification, my question is how would they go for wiring in Pamban bridge... As wiring is not possible in NEW SINGLE truss span up down moving bridge being constructed/ planned replacing old Scherzer's span bridge...

Of course, services will be increased as RMM needs more connection with places out of Tamil Nadu too because of its pilgrimage centre status and new APJ Abdul Kalam memorial and tourist island status ...

And electrification would ensure seamless operation by elocos ...

My proposition would be to electrify from MDU till MMM Mandapam and leave MMM Mandapam - RMM Rameswaram as it is ...

well obviously SR erred. When they have approval of VM-TPJ via MV-KMU-TJ, then obviously they should have proposed electrification of TPJ-MNM-RMM also so that the Boat Mail route got electrified.

From operation point of view access to GOC diesel shed/Workshop is very important for SR until 100% section gets electrified. So TPJ-KKDI-MNM section might be taken up after electrification of VM-MV-TPJ, TJ-KIK, MV-TVR.
MDU-MNM-RMM has no such issues SR electrify this section before taking up TPJ-MNM and TVR-KKDI section.
