Crack on railway track delays trains

VELLORE: A crack on one of the rails on the broad gauge railway track at Asamandur between Anvardhikhanpettai and Chitheri Railway Stations near Arakkonam delayed several trains for about half an hour on 10-11-2007.

According to railway police, the Chennai-Erode Yercaud Express, in which Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin was travelling to Erode, was detained at Arakkonam. Several other trains were also detained.

A spokesman of the Railway Protection Force said that such fractures occurred owing to climatic changes on the portion of the track where two pieces of rails are welded.

Railway blockade hits train services

Kokrajhar (PTI): Train services to and fro Assam, including the Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani, were affected on Thursday following the indefinite railway blockade by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRSU).

The blockade has been called by Biswajit faction of AKRSU to press for Schedule Tribe status for Koch Rajbongshis and a separate Kamtapur state.

Official sources said here that more than 1,500 picketers were picked up from different parts of lower Assam districts for disrupting movement of trains.

Kokrajhar, which links the entire north east to the rest of the country, was the worst affected with picketers blocking tracks at Gossaigaon and Chautara, while in neighbouring Chirang district tracks were blocked at Bijni.

The down Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express was controlled at New Bongaigaon station while other trains were regulated at Salakati, Rangia, Kamakhya and Alipurduar railway stations.

The Atul Ray faction of AKRSU is observing a four-day 'chakka bandh' (road blockade) in support of the same demand since Wednesday.

Vedike's 'rail roko' on December 1, 2007
Friday November 30 2007 06:47 IST

BELGAUM: The Belgaum unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Praveen Shetty faction) will resort to ‘rail roko’ on December 1, 2007, to draw the attention of Union Government to Karnataka’s various demands including classical language status to Kannada.

In a press release, the faction warned that the token stir on Saturday would be converted into long-drawn and harsher state-wide agitation if the Centre ignored the State’s needs.

The faction has also urged the Government to rename Belgaum as Belagavi and to name Belgaum Railway Station after Kittur Rani Chennamma.

This is unfair,

What have Article 371 and grant of classical status to a language got to do with trains... why should those poor inanimate things be brought to a halt when they have absolutely no connection with the above demands?
