Dear members,

Yet another new line in TN gets the nod from the Railway Ministry.

The perseverance of the DG MP, Shri N.S.V Chittan has paid off.

The DG-Kumuli BG line of 123 kms has been approved at a cost of 473.89 Crores. The line will pass through:

1. Vakkampatti

2. Siddhaiyankottai

3. Singarakottai

4. Vattalagundu

5. Kenguvaarpatti

6. Devadanapatti

7. Periyakulam

8. Azhagapuri

9. Theni

10. Bodi

11. Rasingaapuram

12. Sindhalaicheri

13. Uttamapalaiyam

14. Cumbum

15. Gudalur (Not to be confused with the one in Nilgiris District)

Land Acquisition will start in a couple of months. The project has been sent to the Planning Commission for final approval.

Surprisingly, the new line is skipping Nilakottai, which is a Taluk HQ in DG District.

If the new line materialises, Vatalagundu will become the nearest Rail head for Kodaikkanal Hills.

Between Theni and Cumbum, the route is same as Kottayam- Madurai line, whose airial survey was over long back.

For TN, the new line brings an additional route between Dindugal and Madurai or at least up to the district HQ of Theni.

That a good News.. As per the news it seems its approved by railway ministry but yet to be approved by RB. Let us see.

In my view the line will be super hit only if its extended to touch another point in kerala most likely sabarimalai. Especially since the extension till Gudalur is approved I anticipate the line will needs to be extended to Kottayam via vandiperiyar.

This is the exact alignment of Dindugal - Sabarimalai project announced a decade back but put in cold storage. As The recent report just turned down the ambitious Angamali - Sabari project its even more important that Sabari is atleast connected from Eastern side. This mean Bodi to Ernakulam via devikulam, munnar road may not happen at all and forever shelved

Dear Nishanth,

Thanks for providing the Map for the proposed route.

But what does the red-dotted line indicates, say ex.Theni towards West?

Can you also name the Places where the red-dotted line ends? If I am correct, they should be Ernakulam and Kottayam. Please correct me.

Dear Nishanth,

Also, I have a doubt. Going by the route given, is the proposed new line going to run parallel to the Theni - Bodi line. I think that line which is in MG presently should become BG by then. So, the stretch from Teni to BDNK should become a double BG line.

Also, which would become a junction ? Teni or BDNK ? Or both ?

bye & cheers,
ravi

You are correct. In Tamil letters, Ernakulam and Kottayam are writen.

Dear Ravi,

Theni will be the junction. GCeed Teni- Bodi line will become part of the new line. By that time Madurai- Teni line also will be GCeed, by logical conclusion. Idea

Dear Ravi,

##As per the Map provided by Dilip, BODI falls in Ernakulam-route.

##In view of the Dindigul-Kumuli Line via Theni, now under consideration, perhaps THENI might become a four-line junction.

##Am I right Dilip?Smile

Dear Sri Nair,

What would the approximate road distance from Kumuli to Kottayam? Is this a plain terrain or ghat section?

Dilip,
The proposed railway line goes west to Bodi before turning south/SW towards Cumbum. SH turns S/SW from theni itself. This alignment would pass through most scenic part of Western Ghats and would actually go through Vaigai Dam.

Dear Sri VSP,

By road, Madurai- Teni is common for Madurai- Kumili- Mundakkayam-Kottayam road and Madurai- Munnar bye pass- Ernakulam road.

Kottayam- Mundakkayam is 52 KMs and is PLAINS. Mundakkayam- Kumili is 57 KMs and is HIGH RANGE.

Kumili is about 3500 feet above sea level. A BG line to there is near impossible. We will be able to find some lower elevevation places very near to Kumily- Kottayam road and can expect plenty of tunnels to avoid steep gradients. In such case station names will be KUMILI ROAD etc.

Dear Maduraiman,

Vaigai Dam is a few KMs from Andippatti in Andippatti- Periakulam road. Andippatti is in Madurai- Teni road and Periakulam is in Dindugal- Teni road.

Dear Sri Nair,

Thanks for your exhaustive reply. This means, the distance from Dindigul to Kottayam would be 123+119=242 Kms.

It remains to be seen, whether the line would be taken to Kottayam.

It is clear from the list of of stations that this line would move to Bodi and then comes down to Kambam, which means Theni would be a three-line junction.

Since, the authorities might not evince interest for Bodi-Munnar-Ernakulam part, perhaps, Bodi might not become a Junction.
